3 Day course for Staff working with Children, Young People, the Elderly, and Vulnerable Adults who require the full range of physical intervention, restraint, and conflict management skills. This course teaches the underpinning legal knowledge, conflict management skills, and intervention techniques necessary to de-escalate confrontation and safely manage aggression, and physical intervention in schools and education.

The Awarding Body Level 2 Intermediate Award in Physical Restraint Practice (Care & Control) has been specifically written for Care Staff and Education Staff to achieve a Nationally Recognised Level 2 vocationally specific qualification on the knowledge, understanding and skills learners need to undertake appropriate and effective physical restraint to an intermediate standard.

The Main Aims of the Course:

Learn safe a full spectrum of legally audited restraint techniques for use the children and vulnerable service users.

Learn disengagement and self defence skills that allow staff to safely escape from an aggressive service user.

Learn how to:

  • defuse and de-escalate incidents.
  • physically intervene with pupils, using legally audited, safe techniques.
  • ensure the safety of all involved.
  • avoid accusations of misconduct.
  • includes more restrictive techniques where a need is identified
  • handling and avoiding prone positions

Course Objectives

To achieve a successful pass in this course learners will be expected to:

  • Understand the requirements of the various pieces of legislation with regard to the Physical Restraint of Children and Young People including: The Children Act 1989 and associated Government guidance documents, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, The Education Act 1997, The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006, The Education and Inspections Act 2006;
  • Understand Reasonable Force in relation to physical restraint by reference to Common & Criminal Law.
  • Examine the requirements of Health and Safety statute and associated Regulations and show how they apply to physical restraint.
  • Evaluate the risk of positional asphyxia and other risks associated with physical restraint and explore how to minimise those risks.
  • Differentiate between holding, escorting and restraining and non-harmful seated restraint techniques and how to apply them.
  • Demonstrate and explain how to gradually de-escalate and relax restraint to allow the subject being restrained to regain self-control.
  • Explore when it may be possibly necessary to use a more restrictive technique consistent with the principles of Reasonable Force, Health and Safety statute and the Human Rights Act.

Pre-egistration requirements

Candidates who register for the 3 Day Physical Restraint (Care & Control) for those working with children and vulnerable adults must have:

  • The physical capability to be able to undertake physical skills training, and...
  • The personal ability to undertake classroom training and sit written exam papers.

Certification

All delegates are issued with Get Safe Award Certificates after successful completion of the course. Optional Awarding Body qualification is available if required.
